NAHA Membership
Karen Flam discussed the purpose of NAHA and why we meet on a quarterly
basis. Karen stated that one of the many benefits one obtains when becoming
a member is the opportunity to network. Membership fees are as follows:
$45.00 for a friend of aromatherapy status and for $100.00 you become
a professional or business member. There were pamphlets were distributed
for anyone interested in joining. As well Karen stated that we are eligible
with membership to receive the Aromatherapy Journal, which is published
4 times per year. The website for NAHA is www.NAHA.org.
ARC – Aromatherapy Registration Council
Katherine Graf informed the attendees about the ARC organization
and exam. She stated that you needed to have completed Level 1 or 2 aromatherapy
courses or something equivalent to be able to take the exam. You can obtain
more information from www.aromatherapycouncil.org. On this website you
can download a sample exam and handbook. Greg, an attendee, mentioned
that he took the exam. He stated it was about 225 questions, multiple
choice and the time limit is 3 hours. He didn’t feel it was too
difficult because he is a good test taker. Most of the questions were
based around safety and Latin. The exam is $275.00 and is valid for 5
years. One of the benefits in taking the exam is if you pass, then you
become a RA – Registered Aromatherapist. This gives some credibility
to you as a practitioner and the field of Aromatherapy. In this US this
provides some common body of knowledge. In Australia, France and England
one can go to the pharmacy and get a prescription for essential oils however
in the US this is not the standard.
The next ARC exam is March 13 however the deadline was set for January 15.
November 13 would be next scheduled exam with a deadline for September 15. There are testing centers all over the country and there are a Code of Ethics. Someone asked the questions regarding what are the
consequences if one violates the Code of Ethics and Katherine stated she was not sure but would look into it.
Presentation on Sandalwood by Trygve Harris
Trygve gave a great presentation on Sandalwood and Agar Wood. This is a brief synopsis of the presentation.
Sandalwood is quasi legal
Exported from India but at this time it is illegal
Sandalwood also comes from the South Pacific – it is grown all over the South Pacific
16 different species
Semi Parasitic tree
Great for sore throats
Hydrates dry skin, it helps focus the mind and it is a powerful aphrodisiac
Becomes complex and mature about 25-30 years
Fabulous in the cold or interior heat
Add a few drops in the bathtub and it will heat for hours
Medically a great antiseptic
Great to mix with Bergamot and Tea Tree
We passed around vials of Sandalwood and were able to test the variety of Sandalwood that attendees brought.
Agar Wood –
Great information however did not get much of it because it was a lot
to keep track of. Trygve explained the differences in the Agar wood as
well as “oum” the essential oil extracted from the wood. She
also burned a piece of Agarwood which was quite transporting.
